By now, we have all seen or heard that ICE has begun to deport immigrants. None of us are surprised. This was the president's campaign promise and America’s wish.
What is shocking is that the list of potential deportees is growing. Following the remarks of Bishop Mariann Budde during the prayer service at the National Cathedral in January, Republican Congressman Mike Collins said that Budde should be deported.
Budde’s problem is not her documents. She was born in the U.S. The problem is her sermon. Addressing the congregation, including the new president, Budde did not criticize, threaten, or warn him. Instead, she did something very ministerial, very Christ-like. She asked for mercy.
Budde’s pleas for mercy were for the families of those facing deportation. And for families of LGBTQIA+ persons. She asked the president to show mercy to those who are scared.
This appears to be the new qualification to be deported. A plea for mercy. Of course, Mr. Collins, the president, and his defenders took it personally. Has the day come when the clergy cannot seek mercy for the frightened? But Collins' reaction makes it clear who is really scared.
