Here at First Baptist Church La Feria we are in the middle of a week of Vacation Bible School. It is a big deal for kids and adults, with music, crafts, food, and Bible Study. But also, a lot of fun.
Churches are not always a lot of fun. Even Jesus’ disciples were not kid friendly. He told them, "Do not stop the children, the Kingdom of God belongs to them.” Let them have some fun!
First Baptist has had its own issues with fun. In the 1930s the church voted to oppose efforts in La Feria to build a public swimming pool. Although many people could not swim and often drowned, the church would not support a place where there would be “mixed bathing” and fun.
In our attempts to be holy, churches can easily become stuffy and no fun. It is hard to find the right balance. But when we imagine heaven we do not see grumpy old men but happy cherubs.
Ironically, the Bible never says Jesus laughed. He was sad, he was angry, but laughing is not mentioned. It did not have to be said. Never a party pooper, Jesus was the life of the party.
